Well Water Testing in Ireland - What You Need to Know

More than 750,000 homes in Ireland rely on a private well, borehole, or spring for their water supply. Unlike mains water, which is treated and monitored by Irish Water, private water supplies are entirely the homeowner's responsibility. That means if something is wrong with your water — bacteria, iron, hydrogen sulphide, or high nitrates — it's up to you to find it and fix it.

The good news is that testing your well water is straightforward, affordable, and something every private well owner should do regularly. In this guide we'll explain what to test for, how often, what the results mean, and what to do if problems are found.

How Many Irish Homes Use Private Wells?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), approximately 750,000 people in Ireland — around 15% of the population — are supplied by private groundwater sources including dug wells, drilled boreholes, and springs. The vast majority of these are in rural areas, with the highest concentrations in Connacht, Ulster, and the midlands.

In counties like Monaghan, Cavan, Roscommon, and Galway, private wells are the norm rather than the exception. If you've bought or built a rural property in these areas, there's a strong chance you're on a private supply.

Why Is Well Water Testing Important?

Unlike mains water, which is regularly tested and treated, private well water can change quality without any visible signs. Contaminants like E.coli, coliform bacteria, nitrates, and radon are colourless, odourless, and tasteless — you can't detect them without a lab test.

The EPA recommends that all private well owners test their water at least once a year. More frequent testing is advised after:

  • Heavy rainfall or flooding

  • Construction or drilling work nearby

  • Changes in taste, colour, or odour

  • A new baby in the household

  • Illness that could be waterborne

Untreated well water contamination can cause serious gastrointestinal illness, particularly in young children, the elderly, and anyone with a compromised immune system.

What Should You Test For?

A basic well water test typically covers the most common contaminants. A full analysis goes further. Here's what each covers:

Basic microbiological test Checks for E.coli and total coliforms — bacteria that indicate faecal contamination. This is the most important test for any well. E.coli in drinking water is a serious health risk.

Chemical analysis Tests for nitrates, nitrites, pH, hardness, iron, manganese, fluoride, and ammonia. High nitrate levels are particularly common in agricultural areas and are dangerous for infants.

Iron and manganese Common in Monaghan, Cavan, and the wider Ulster region due to local geology. High iron causes brown staining on laundry, fixtures, and sinks. Manganese causes black staining and a metallic taste. Both can clog pipes over time.

Hydrogen sulphide If your water smells like rotten eggs, hydrogen sulphide gas is almost certainly present. It's formed from organic matter decomposing underground and is more common in shallow wells or wells near septic systems.

Radon Radon gas can dissolve into groundwater in certain geological areas. Ireland has some of the highest radon levels in Europe, particularly in parts of Leinster and Munster. Testing for radon in well water is recommended if your property is in a high-radon area.

How Often Should You Test?

Contaminant

Recommended frequency

E.coli / coliforms

Every year minimum

Nitrates

Every 2–3 years (annually near farmland)

Iron / manganese

Every 2 years or if staining appears

Full chemical analysis

Every 3–5 years

After any flooding or nearby construction

Immediately

How Do You Get Your Well Water Tested?

There are two main options:

DIY test kits — basic microbiological test kits are available from hardware shops and online. They're useful for a quick check but don't cover the full range of contaminants.

Laboratory testing — the most reliable option. You collect a sample following specific hygiene instructions, then post it to an accredited lab. Results are usually returned within 5–10 working days and include a full breakdown of what was found and whether levels are within Irish and EU drinking water standards.

At Crystal Clear Water we can arrange lab testing on your behalf and help you interpret the results. We've been working with rural well owners in Monaghan, Cavan, Louth, and surrounding counties for over 10 years, and we understand the specific water quality challenges in this region.

What Happens If Problems Are Found?

The treatment depends entirely on what the test reveals. That's why a proper lab analysis — rather than a guess or a generic fix — is always the right starting point. We design every treatment plan around the actual test results.

For bacteria (E.coli / coliforms) A UV disinfection system is the most effective chemical-free solution. It eliminates 99.9% of bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms using ultraviolet light, with no chemicals added to your water. Annual lamp replacement is all that's needed to maintain it.

For iron and manganese We install self-maintaining filtration units that remove iron and manganese without adding chemicals. The system backwashes automatically, so maintenance is minimal.

For hydrogen sulphide Aeration and oxidation filtration removes hydrogen sulphide effectively. The rotten egg smell disappears immediately after installation.

For hardness and limescale A water softener eliminates hardness completely. Particularly relevant in Monaghan and Cavan where hard water is widespread even in private supplies.

For drinking water purity Many well owners add a reverse osmosis system to a dedicated kitchen tap for drinking and cooking water — providing an additional layer of purification beyond whatever whole-house treatment is installed.

What Does Well Water Treatment Cost in Ireland?

Costs vary depending on what your water needs. As a rough guide:

  • UV disinfection system: from approximately €600 installed

  • Iron / manganese filter: from approximately €800 installed

  • Water softener: from €900 installed

  • Reverse osmosis drinking system: from €450 installed

  • Combined packages are available at reduced cost

The investment pays for itself quickly in protected appliances, reduced detergent use, and the peace of mind of knowing your family's water is safe.
