Boiling Water Taps Ireland - Are They Worth It?

The humble kettle has been a fixture in Irish kitchens for generations. But a new generation of boiling water taps is making it increasingly redundant — and the market in Ireland is growing fast. If you've been wondering whether a boiling water tap is worth the investment, or you're not sure what they actually do, this guide covers everything you need to know.

What Is a Boiling Water Tap?

A boiling water tap — also called an instant hot water tap or boiling tap — is a kitchen tap connected to a small under-counter boiler unit that keeps water at or near 100°C at all times. When you want boiling water, you simply turn the tap rather than waiting for a kettle to heat up.

Most modern boiling water taps do more than just boiling water. The best ones — like the Instaboil 4-in-1 that we now supply and install at Crystal Clear Water — deliver multiple temperature settings and filtered water from the same tap.

3-in-1 vs 4-in-1: What's the Difference?

3-in-1 taps deliver three outputs: boiling water, regular hot water, and cold water. They replaced the standard kitchen mixer tap and added boiling water on top.

4-in-1 taps go a step further and add filtered cold water as a fourth output — meaning your tap is also your water filter. You get a dedicated filtered drinking water stream alongside the boiling, hot, and cold functions.

The Instaboil 4-in-1 we supply actually goes further still, offering five temperature settings: cold filtered, warm (approximately 40°C), hot (approximately 60°C), very hot (approximately 80°C), and full boiling at 100°C. This makes it genuinely versatile — not just for your morning tea, but for baby formula, herbal teas, cold brew coffee, cooking, and more.

How Does the Filtration Work?

Every Instaboil 4-in-1 system comes with an anti-scale filter and a carbon block filter included as standard.

  • The anti-scale filter protects the boiler unit from limescale build-up — essential in hard water areas like Monaghan, Cavan, and most of Leinster, and it significantly extends the life of the system

  • The carbon block filter removes chlorine, taste, and odour from your cold filtered water, giving you clean, great-tasting drinking water on demand

For customers who want the highest level of water purity, the Instaboil is also fully compatible with our Crystal Clear Reverse Osmosis systems. You can connect it to a 5 or 6-stage RO system under the sink for ultra-pure water across all four outputs.

Are Boiling Water Taps Safe?

This is the question most people ask first — and it's a fair one. Having boiling water on tap with children in the house sounds like a potential hazard.

In practice, boiling water taps are designed with safety as a primary concern. The Instaboil 4-in-1 features a child-safe spring-lock mechanism on the boiling function — you need to press and hold a dedicated safety button before the boiling water will dispense. It cannot be activated accidentally.

The taps are also WRAS approved (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) and CE certified, meaning they meet UK and European safety and quality standards. These are the same certifications we require of all the water treatment products we supply at Crystal Clear Water.

What Are the Running Costs?

The under-counter boiler unit keeps water hot continuously — similar to how a combi boiler works. Modern units are well insulated and energy efficient.

In practice, running costs are comparable to using a kettle — and for people who boil a kettle multiple times a day and frequently throw away unused boiled water, a boiling tap can actually be more energy efficient, because it only dispenses what you need with no waste.

The filters need to be changed annually. This is a straightforward service we can add you to our reminder list for — one visit per year is all it takes to keep the system running perfectly.

How Much Does a Boiling Water Tap Cost in Ireland?

Boiling water taps vary considerably in price depending on the brand, finish, and what's included. Budget units from online marketplaces start around €300–€400, but these typically don't include professional installation, filters, or a quality boiler unit, and after-sales support can be non-existent.

The Instaboil 4-in-1 that we supply starts at €1,350 fully installed, which includes:

  • The tap itself in your chosen finish

  • The under-counter boiler unit

  • Anti-scale filter

  • Carbon block filter

  • Professional installation by our certified team

  • Full after-sales support

Six finishes are available: Chrome (€1,350), Matt Black, Brushed Nickel, and Gun Metal Grey (all €1,390), and Brushed Gold and Antique Copper (€1,450).

Are They Worth the Money?

For the right household — yes, clearly. Here's who gets the most value from a boiling water tap:

You'll love it if you:

  • Make tea or coffee multiple times a day

  • Cook pasta, noodles, or anything requiring boiling water regularly

  • Have young children and make baby formula (the warm setting at 40°C is ideal)

  • Currently buy filtered or bottled water for drinking

  • Are renovating your kitchen and want a premium tap that does everything

  • Already have or are getting a water filtration system installed

It's less essential if you:

  • Only use boiling water occasionally

  • Have a very small household

  • Are on a tight budget — in which case a tri-flow filtered tap from €265 installed might be a better starting point

The honest answer is that once people have a boiling water tap, they almost never go back. The convenience of instant boiling water — no waiting, no descaling the kettle, no wasted energy — is something that very quickly becomes part of your daily routine.
